Grad Thesis Climbers Bible
Book- 126 pages - 10x6 in
My fall semester grad project explored one of my favourite topics, rock climbing. I wanted to examine the past and future of climbing, and to discover the essence of climbing that was being destroyed by the consumer culture. I focused my research on the ethics, history and technology of rock climbing. I wanted to break the idea of climbing down to basic levels in a way that would resonate with the majority of the climbing community. When I began brainstorming copy and layout design I noticed a compelling connection between the metaphors I had chosen and the metaphors used in the world’s religions. I thought, what better way to connect with people than to create a religion, a climbing religion. The Climbing Bible pokes fun at human nature and at the silly points of life using the sport of climbing. There is the story of creation, the book of sin and virtue, a book of mecca, a book of crusades, and a nice little story about Paul the great proselytizer and his climbing gym, Arch. All of the images in the book were taken by me over the summer and during the semester.
